In mid November, 1914, 5th Division, including the 1st Devonshire battalion of 14 Brigade moved to the Messines Ridge front, north of Neuve Eglise and facing Wytschaete, where they remained for the rest of the winter. On 23rd December, 1914, 1st Devonshire moved into trenches at Wulverghem where they remained until relieved on 29th December. Alfred Pearson died from wounds on 29th December.
